Specialty Training Session (Evening: Brandeis Only)

This evening session 5-7:30 pm July 20-24 at Brandeis is offered for

·         Beginners or less experienced players that would like some general skills training, but were waitlisted for the 10am-4pm session.   OR if enough players express interest in starting an evening general skills court,  we will add that even if the day session is not filled.

·         Experienced players who would like POSITION TRAINING ONLY.   Two position groups are offered:  Hitter/Blocker  and Setter/Back Row  See description below

Hitter/Blocker Camp - this 2 1/2 hr/day camp will provide training for all aspects of the front row hitting/blocking positions.  Since hitters need to be able to attack off of server receive, free ball, blocking and defense, those skills will also be trained during the session.   Near the end of the week, more experience players will combine with the setters and back row players to work more on team like applications of what they've learned in the first few days.

However, the main focus for hitters at the beginning of the week will be:

1.  Approach, using your approach to get you correct positioning on the ball,  increased power and higher jump
2.  Armswing technique, giving you more power and control
3.  Timing - on different types of play sets but also working on inconsistent sets and what to do with them.
4.  Different hitting shots - hitting direction and spots, wiping off, hitting off the top of the block, block, off speed shots, gaining the knowledge of when to use different shots.
5.  Blocking for all hitters technique, timing, and movement.  Middle hitter/blockers will spend more time on blocking than the outsides since this is the primary job of the middles.

Setting/Back Row camp - this 2 1/2 session will combine both positions, so that passers and setters can use their skills to practice their positions in game like settings.  But each position will first focus on the individual technique and movement needs of their own position.

Setters – the directors of the offense, need to work on basic setting technique, footwork, transitions from offense to defense (front and back row) and vice versa plus communication.    After good form is established we will introduce jump setting, various sets and combine the setters with the hitter groups so that each can practice performing their jobs in combination with other positions on the court.

Setters will work on:

1. Footwork!  Footwork!  Footwork!  Getting stable and executing with correct form and technique.
2. Standard sets
3. Setting off bad passes and in difficult situations.
4. Jump setting and setter dumps
5. Setting quick middle attacks (ones, thirty ones, slides)

Back Row – it all starts with the pass.   Sometimes the unsung hero, back row players need to master the basics of serving (consistently and aggressively for points), receiving free ball passing, and digging, but also need to do all the small things to keep the rally alive, like covering the hitters, picking up the overpasses or setter dumps and even back row attacking.

Back Row players will focus on:

1. Basic movement and platform
2. Free ball passing
3. Serve and serve receive
4. Forearm and overhead digging.
5. Extensions, dives, sprawls, and rolls.
