For
beginners, it is often intimidating to attend your first camp. You
feel that you will be the only one there without teammates and the only one that
has no experience. Trust me, at the end of the first day, you
realize that this is a great environment to see if volleyball is a match
for you.You will learn all the basics
required to play the sport and prepare for a team tryout, this year or in the
future. You will meet many others just
like yourself since we keep all the beginners together in one group, often 2-3
courts to start out. After the first day, there may be some players
that opt to move a bit faster - either because they are very athletic or have
had some exposure to the game (siblings, middle school league,
camp). Our coaches are able to gear the instruction and intensity
level toward the group with which they are working. We tend to be
somewhat flexible, but in general, our beginners are age 11 and up.Most are entering 8th or 9th
grade. And most of our campers are girls,
but boys high school and collegiate volleyball is growing and we get boys every
year at camp too.
The format for the beginners is often different than the rest of the camp
because we realize that you need more instruction on basic individual
skills, and you need to gain the knowledge of the sport before you start
specializing in any one position. We will give you some exposure to
all aspects of the game, but focus mostly on the basic skills that are needed
for the 1st year level of competition.
